Classification Introduction

What is Classification & how it is related to PLM?

  • Engineering/product based company has tons of product data. The product data in the system includes legacy, current offered and future offering products.

  • Different variety and high number of products has caused more production management.

  • Each product is created in a specific time and has a life cycle. Duration of the product lifecycle can be years but this life ends at a specified time.

  • The main reason for using PLM system is to manage the product data. There are a lot of data produced or used in product lifecycle and with managing of these data and information can benefit the companies in lot of ways.

  • History shows that products are classified even when product drawings were on paper. They had been classified and managed in metal or wooden files.

  • The huge amount of data that is generated in different part of product life cycle should be grouped and arranged in a structured way.

  • This categorizing of data is data classification. Without data classifying, finding previous data is not possible or it will be time consuming.

  • Data classification helps the data producers to place their data in a structure for faster search and reuse of them. The data classification structure is based on data attributes.

Benefits of classification:

  • By allowing you to manage previously designed, validated and approved product and tool definition data, the classification enables parts and tools reusability.

  • Encourages use of standardized design elements and methods for reducing inventory.

  • Saves time otherwise lost searching for widely dispersed product definitions.

  • Eliminates duplication of definition data in multiple systems.

  • Lets designers focus on a product’s most marketable innovations by enabling them to quickly locate definition data for its derivative elements..

  • Improves utilization of your manufacturing assets

  • Reduces new product initiative cost through the lessons learnt.

  • Classification improves time-to-market and lowers product development costs through ease of use and powerful search to optimize your re-use thought.

  • Allows easy identification of substitutes and alternate parts for Design Engineers.

Teamcenter Classification

  • Teamcenter classification enables to build hierarchies, classes, attributes and valid attribute values into class definitions.

  • This enables design engineers to quickly search the library when they want to locate a particular design element and reuse its related product and process data in a new project or program.

  • Teamcenter Classification is used to create and maintain a hierarchical classification structure with classification attributes.

  • Classification is supported in rich client as well as active workspace.

Use Classification to:

  • Classify workspace objects.

  • Find classification objects.

  • Modify the attribute values of classification objects.

  • Delete classification objects from the classification hierarchy.
